Didn't know the Seinfeld reference, I like it. As for the first root not being an idiom, I'd have to say "quite the contraire" (I know, weak): you wouldn't literally be on or off the booze, no?

The reversal agrees with Seinfeld's on/off wagon observations. The booze is on the wagon, so if you're off, you're sober. The only beef I have to pick with you on this is that the first root isn't really much of an idiom.
